HDTV Control Room for Vancouver 2010

In February 2009, Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI) GmbH was commissioned as general contractor by MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk / Central German Broadcasting Corporation) to update TV Control Room 1. This is MDR’s first control room to be designed to fully conform to the 720p standard for future HDTV productions.

ARD (the first German TV network) saw Vancouver 2010 as being the start of the new HDTV era. MDR, the Leipzig-based TV network serving three states, had taken charge of broadcasting the Winter Olympic Games within ARD.
MDR broadcasted live for approximately 230 hours using the new HDTV format during peak-time viewing on behalf of ARD. In addition to this, there were the digital channels. The sound was transmitted in 5.1. Dolby Surround.

MDR produced its Olympic programme with the help of the new TV Control Room 1. Therefore, the control room was handed over as early as September so that the staff involved could get used to the new technology and knew the ins and outs in time for the beginning of the Olympic Games.

The video control room was equipped with a Sony MSV 8000G video mixer, an Omneon ingest server and an EVS Highlight Server. In the sound control room, a StageTec Aurus mixer with 56 faders was used for 5.1 sound processing. The intercom system was a Clear-Com matrix.

It was decided to combine video and sound editing for the 8-camera control room in the same area. The highlight ingest and the main studio area were in separate rooms, but there were visual contact with the control room via windows.

All the furnishings was designed and made in MCI’s own workshops. Moreover, MDR was given 3D drawings of all the furnishings during the planning phase to give them a better impression.
