Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI) GmbH had been commissioned with the reconstruction of the entire master control room as the main contractor by NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk).
The master control room continued to serve as the central signal distribution area for the production, editing and transmission complexes of NDR-Fernsehen, both internally between the various production complexes and externally for the integration of the state broadcasting centres and the signal exchange in ARD and worldwide.
The new television master control room supports both the previous standard (SD) and the high-definition format (HD). Consequently, the central signal infrastructure and the cross-complex cabling were designed to be compatible with different formats. As television production is characterised by a variety of formats, the master control room is taking over the central format conversion function. The production areas from the master control room are accordingly supplied with their respective internal production format and they, in turn, deliver them to the master control room in their internal production format.
The technical furniture is constructed in cooperation with MCI’s longstanding partner, KWOD design, and manufactured in the MCI workshops in a client-specific way.
The installation began in June 2009 and commissioning followed from September. After the trial operation, the final transfer to the new master control room took place in April 2010.
