Renovating the NDR 2 TV Studio´s Production Center

In August 2017, NDR commissioned MCI to renovate the NDR2 TV studio production center in Hamburg-Lokstedt. The scope of the assignment was to update the technological facilities used for TV production, as well as the studio’s infrastructure itself, including its equipment room and assorted terminal boxes. The NDR2 TV studio’s production center is characterized by a high level of flexibility and efficiency in producing TV programs. In addition to its live shows, “DAS!” and “Mein Nachmittag”, the studio also produces a daily news program, “NDR aktuell”, as well as the shows “NDR aktuell Extra” and “ARD Brennpunkt”. The new studio still includes image production, sound production, as well as an off-speaker room.

In addition to conventional signal transmission pathways, a redundant audio network based on the DANTE standard is also installed. The central Lawo VSM control system connects with, among other things, the router as well as the audio network to implement crosspoints and for processing, and synchronizes both G&D KVM matrixes.
The central Platinum IP3 video router with integrated Imagine Multiview is equipped with modern fiber- and BNC connectors, while also offering the option of later connecting to an IP-based AV infrastructure. A pool of add-in devices can be looped into the digital video matrix. A Nexus AKS with eight base devices was chosen for the audio router.
The production center will be equipped with a Clear-Com Eclipse Omega HX intercom matrix and the FreeSpeak II integrated, wireless DECT system. The intercoms will be partly IP-connected. Up to 64 audio signals can be exchanged over a MADI fiber optic connection between the AKS and the intercom matrix. In addition, the command system must be connected with a minimum of 64 bidirectional audio channels to the Dante audio network. To do so, the Clear-Com matrix requires just one MADI and one DANTE card each.
